Take action today
The middle of the year is a great time to reflect how the year is going. Depending on when you do your strategic planning process, you may or may not have some results already, but if you take the calendar year, a mid-year review is a great opportunity to find if you’re on the right track.
MEET WITH YOUR TEAM
Invite your team to meet for a conversation about goals and achievements, and take some time to reflect on these questions:
-Are we satisfied with how the year is going?
-Have we achieved what we planned for these two quarters?
-Which goals we didn’t achieve and why?
-Is there something we need to change in order to achieve our goals?
-What have we learned about ourselves, our clients and our processes?
-What are the next steps we need to take to achieve the rest of our goals?
-What could be coming our way?
-How do we prepare for that?
-How do we prepare the rest of the organization?
Remember that dialogue is as important as any other team activity. Your team will need to feel safe to debrief on the way they have worked together and to bring forward ideas on how to improve. You will need to create an environment of trust and engagement for your team to thrive, but you will also need to encourage them to take action.
BUILD ORGANIZATIONAL CAPACITY
Create project teams that support the teams responsible for each one of the missing goals and remember that investing in developing the capacity of the organization to achieve those goals will support future goals. The same can be said for the change agility of your organization, helping them stay flexible and adaptable to changing goals and processes will support them in the future.
Make the adjustments you need, but don’t lose momentum and don’t get lost in rewriting processes or changing the structure. Inspire people through action; as my notebook says: The future starts today, not tomorrow.
